STEINUNN BJARNADOTTIR

Bergmál : Echo

Living in Iceland, an island beautifully diverse and complex, full of geological forces, with frequent and dramatic weather changes, inevitably forces you to connect with the ground you live on and the inherent dangers that it possesses.

Inspired by the landscape and the cracks, stresses and ruptures that emerge there, my ceramic work explores and embodies the tensity of the earth.

Materials are gathered from diverse Icelandic locations. Clay from mountains, valleys and geothermal areas, stones and sand from black beaches and igneous rock from volcanos. These materials are mixed with commercial ceramic materials to create structured forms. Only after firing does the true personality of the found material reveal itself, with sand melting, stones expanding, clay melting and shrinking, all contrasting with the commercial materials. The manmade and the natural materials in tension.

This work is created in a time of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

RITA ANN BURKE

Incarcerated Innocence

My ceramic work explores the lives of the women incarcerated in and the children born into the Magdalene Laundries, particularly The Good Shepherd Magdalene Laundry, Clare St., Limerick, now

Limerick School of Art and Design.

My work looks to express the innocence of the children and the weight of the grief the women must have felt from that forced separation. From their testimonials, it is evident the Magdalene women lived lives on high alert, with an impending sense of violence that can bring dread and disorientation.

My ceramic work considers that sense of unrelenting tension I imagine they experienced and that constant fear of confinement. My work seeks to express the sense I have of the drudgery of their lives and that physical, daily repetitive work they had to do in the laundries.

SHARON FITZGERALD

Rediscovery

My work explores human interactions, thoughts and expressions using figurative sculpture and painting. It investigates connections to the past, through establishing connections to family members we have never met but that still have relevance. We might be drawn to them through tenuous links such as photos or trinkets left behind, or we might try to imagine what they were like if we share similarities.

I possess a single photo of my great great grandmother. This relative that I never met is the starting point for this body of work.

I use drawing and sculpture to inform myself about her. I get to know her by recreating her, repetition will provide a connection. Working in 2-dimensions and 3-dimensions will help me restore them as a person.

This repetition provides many different facets to the photo, much like the imagined facets of my great great grandmother’s personality.

HANNAH O'CONNELL

Transposed

My work explores the patterns created by line and light in the urban landscape.  These small, unnoticed but dynamic elements are captured through photography, creating a stillness in movement.  Translated into ceramics, the essential qualities of line, light and contrast take on a new dynamic.

Utilising multiple inter-disciplinary processes alongside traditional and digital skills, my work navigates positives and negatives both within the imagery and the processes.

Delicate and translucent materials such as porcelain paper clay contrast with robust metals to translate 2-dimensional shadow to 3-dimensional form.  These are in constant motion through the interplay of light.

AOIFE QUINN

Error:  Can't Play

My work acknowledges the frustrations of navigating life alongside COVID-19. I am exploring this through the form of the computer screen, utilising imagery and screenshots that juxtapose what I see against what the screen sees.

While everyone's experience with COVID is singular, the emotions people feel are shared. This work captures that monotonous, mundane and repetitive day to day experience we’re all facing as we interact online.

Screenshots of my face show the range of emotions experienced in this new online world. These coupled with the frequent glitches and error signs that constantly pop up on the computer symbolise the growing frustration with the current online life, the lack of social interaction and how damaging this can be.

I want to create a piece that is relatable. A sense of humour and community is vital within this virtual world we are all adapting to.
