SHARON FITZGERALD

Rediscovery

My work explores human interactions, thoughts and expressions using figurative sculpture and painting. It investigates connections to the past, through establishing connections to family members we have never met but that still have relevance. We might be drawn to them through tenuous links such as photos or trinkets left behind, or we might try to imagine what they were like if we share similarities.

I possess a single photo of my great great grandmother. This relative that I never met is the starting point for this body of work.

I use drawing and sculpture to inform myself about her. I get to know her by recreating her, repetition will provide a connection. Working in 2-dimensions and 3-dimensions will help me restore them as a person.

This repetition provides many different facets to the photo, much like the imagined facets of my great great grandmother’s personality.

BIOGRAPHY

Sharon is currently studying Ceramic Design at Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) having completed a level 6 course in Fine Art with Ceramics. She has previously owned her own business producing bespoke cakes and sugarcraft. Although Sharon has always had a keen interest in painting and visual art, she credits her time spent creating sugar sculptures for this business as the pathway to working with clay.

Sharon is interested in the human form and expression and uses painting and sculpture to realise this. She is often influenced by history and the people of her past but also herself. She loves to infuse some humour where she can in her work. If it makes her smile or laugh when she is sculpting or painting, it is as important to her as any message or lesson her work could hope to portray.
